Solar, agrivoltaic and BESS project development in Italy, from greenfield to RTB
Looking for a developer who can take your projects through Italian permitting? greenfield.solar is an advisory service for investors and developers: we pair you with professionals who bring a project from bare land to ready-to-build, paid through co-development milestones tied to the success of the deal.
From greenfield to RTB, stage by stage
Greenfield
A site is identified and screened for constraints, land use and distance from the grid.
Land secured
Option, preliminary surface-right or purchase agreement signed with the owner.
Grid connection
Connection request filed and the grid operator's solution accepted.
Application filed
Final design and studies submitted under the applicable permitting route.
Permit granted
The authorisation is issued and the appeal period is monitored.
RTB
Permit, grid connection and land rights in place: the project is ready to build.
In a co-development agreement, milestones follow stages like these: the developer's fee for a stage falls due when that stage is reached. See how they are set in milestone-based co-development, and what to check at each step in the guide from greenfield to RTB.
What a solar project developer does in Italy
A solar project developer turns a piece of land into a permitted, grid-connectable project. The developer finds the site, checks constraints and zoning, signs the land agreement with the owner, applies for grid connection, prepares the design and the studies, files the application and follows the procedure until the permit is granted.
The outcome is a ready-to-build (RTB) project: permit granted, grid connection solution accepted, land rights in place. From there it is over to whoever builds and operates the plant.
It is a local job: municipal and regional offices, primary substations and grid nodes, landowners, local engineers. That is why an investor growing in Italy rarely develops everything in-house and looks for a development firm to build the pipeline.
Our role: advisers to investors and developers
We work with several professionals who can develop solar PV, agrivoltaic and BESS projects from greenfield to RTB, and we put them to work with the investors who need that development capacity.
We start from what you are looking for: technology, size, the Italian regions you are interested in, the stage at which you want to come in. On that basis we introduce the right developer and help you set up the relationship. You sign the co-development agreement directly with the developer.
Three technologies, one development path
Each technology has its own constraints, authorities and timing. The right developer is the one who has already been down that road, in that part of Italy.
Ground-mounted solar PV
Utility-scale plants on suitable areas, industrial land, quarries and disused sites. The work turns on site selection, available grid capacity and the permitting route that applies.
Agrivoltaics
On farmland the project has to hold energy and farming together: an agronomic plan, a layout that lets machinery work, and farming that continues for the whole life of the plant.
BESS and storage
Battery energy storage systems, stand-alone or co-located with a solar plant. Little land, a lot of grid: what matters is proximity to substations and the connection solution.
Milestone-based co-development: the developer earns when the project moves forward
In a co-development the investor funds development and the developer brings expertise and local presence. The fee is split into instalments, each tied to a milestone.
Land secured, grid connection accepted, application filed, permit granted, RTB: these are examples of milestones. Which ones apply, and how much each is worth, is set in the agreement between investor and developer.
The principle is simple: interests stay aligned. If a stage is not reached, the fee tied to it does not fall due. The investor pays for results, and the developer is rewarded for every step that brings the project closer to construction.
Who greenfield.solar is for
Investors, funds, IPPs and EPCs
You want to build or expand a pipeline in Italy and need someone developing on the ground. We introduce developers you can work with under a co-development agreement, from site search to ready-to-build.
Developers and engineering firms
You know how to develop and you have sites, relationships and applications under way, but you lack an investor to carry development costs and reward your work at milestones. We introduce you to those looking for exactly that.
greenfield.solar does not assess land or rooftops offered by owners: the service is for investors and project developers. Who we are and how we work is explained on this page.
Frequently asked questions
What does a solar project developer do?
Takes a project from land to ready-to-build: finds and checks the site, secures the land, obtains the grid connection solution, prepares the design and follows permitting until the authorisation is granted. The stages are described in the guide from greenfield to RTB.
Does greenfield.solar develop projects itself?
No. greenfield.solar is an advisory service: it works with several professionals who can develop projects from greenfield to RTB and pairs them with investors. The co-development agreement is signed directly between investor and developer.
How is development paid for?
Through co-development milestones tied to the success of the deal: the developer's fee is split into instalments that fall due when the project reaches stages defined in the agreement, such as grid connection accepted or permit granted.
What does RTB mean?
Ready to build: the project has its permit, an accepted grid connection solution and the land rights. It is ready for construction.
Which parts of Italy do the developers cover?
It depends on the professional: each knows certain areas well. Tell us the regions or provinces you are interested in and we will tell you who it makes sense to talk to.
Do you assess land or rooftops offered by owners?
No. The site is for investors and developers of solar, agrivoltaic and BESS projects, not for property owners.
