BESS project development in Italy
Battery storage, stand-alone or co-located with solar: we pair you with developers who take the project from greenfield to RTB, paid through co-development milestones.
What is different about developing a BESS
A battery energy storage system (BESS) takes up little land and depends almost entirely on the grid. So development runs the other way round from solar: first the connection point, then the land.
A site close to the grid
The search is for land a short distance from substations and grid nodes, ideally industrial or already built-up, with access suited to heavy transport and away from homes. Constraints, hydrogeological risk and zoning are checked as for any project.
Grid connection
Larger projects connect at high voltage and apply to Terna, the transmission operator, for the connection solution; smaller ones apply to the distribution operator. The solution obtained, with the grid works it entails, weighs more than anything else on the value of the project.
Permitting
The route depends on capacity, location and on whether the storage is stand-alone or paired with a generating plant. Besides the electrical design, the application typically includes a noise study, an electromagnetic field assessment and fire-prevention documentation.
Land secured
Surface right or purchase of the land, easements for the line to the delivery point: agreements the developer closes with the owners.
Stand-alone or co-located with solar
| Stand-alone | Co-located with solar | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | The connection point | The site of the generating plant |
| Land | Limited, close to the grid | Inside or next to the plant |
| Connection | Dedicated to storage | Shared with the plant |
| Permitting | Its own procedure | Together with the plant, or as an amendment |
Many investors now ask for hybrid projects: a solar PV or agrivoltaic plant with storage included from the connection request onwards.
How we work with you
We work with professionals who can develop storage projects from greenfield to RTB. We introduce the one suited to your size and target areas and help you set up the milestone-based co-development, which you sign directly with the developer. The stages are described in the guide from greenfield to RTB.
Questions on BESS development
What does BESS stand for?
Battery energy storage system: a battery storage plant connected to the electricity grid.
How much land does a BESS need?
Far less than a solar plant of the same capacity. The area depends on power, storage duration and technology, and is set by the design.
Who grants the grid connection for a BESS in Italy?
Terna for high-voltage connections, the local distribution operator for medium-voltage ones.
Do you also cover hybrid solar-plus-storage projects?
Yes: the developers we work with handle stand-alone storage as well as solar and agrivoltaic projects with storage.
